There is no getting away from the fact that moving home is a very stressful experience. The height of this is moving day itself and if you don’t plan your day carefully then you could be left regretting the fact that you ever decided to move.
One thing that will really help you to relax is if you choose to hire someone to do the heavy lifting for you. Removal companies are often a god send on a day like this and the good ones will really understand what you are going through and do everything they can to help you out.
Assuming you have already taken the common sense approach and hired a reliable removal firm, here are a few other tips for having a successful and smooth running moving day.
Take The Day Off – It’s not like most of us need an excuse to take the day off work but this really is one. Don’t expect to be able to get it all done in your lunch hour or before or after your working day because this is just wishful thinking. If you and your partner, or whoever you are moving with, take the whole day off you don’t have to rush anything and you will have plenty of hands to the pump.
Arrange A Babysitter – If you have kids, you might want them to be part of this experience but the truth is that they are only likely to increase your stress levels or get in the way. Also, with removal men coming in and out of your property and lots of heavy lifting going on, it could be a safety risk to have them around.
It’s best to ask a family member or friend to look after them for a while so that you can concentrate on other things.
Don’t Leave It All To The Last Minute –Even if you live in a small flat, you will be amazed at how much stuff you can accumulate over a short period of time. Therefore getting ahead on the packing front is a must. Make sure everything is labelled clearly and that anything you want to use as soon as you arrive in your new home is close at hand. There’s nothing worse than wanting to settle down with a nice warm brew but not having a clue which box the kettles in.
Eat Yourself Out Of House And Home – Space is precious on moving day and you will want to try and use as few boxes as you can. Therefore there won’t be room for excessive food items to be transferred between properties. Plan to use up most of the stuff in the cupboards in the weeks building up to moving day and try and hold off on the big shop until you have settled into your new home.
Pack All Appliances Appropriately – Some of the most awkward things to move are large appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines; so they need to be packed appropriately. Most warranties state that washing machines and tumble dryers need to be fitted with drum locks if they are to be transported and some removal companies may specify this too.
Cookers and will need to be disconnected correctly, so seek professional guidance if needed and make sure all fridges and freezer are disconnected and cleaned out in advance.
Arrange Parking – If you have double yellow lines or other parking restrictions outside your house then you may have to arrange for special dispensation so that your removal company can park their van in the vicinity. This can easily be done by simply contacting your local council.
