The Toyota Vitz is the segment B. Depending on the market, the generation and the body, the model is named Vitz, Belta, Echo, Platz, Yaris or Vios. The design is not identical in all countries for a given generation, with clear differences to markets in Asia, Australia, Europe and America. Three generations, launched in 1999, 2005 and 2011 available with body hatchback three and five-door and four-door sedan.
The first generation of the Toyota Vitz 2008 was sold from 2005 through 2011. It came as a two-door hatchback, a four-door hatchback or four-door sedan. In 2013 Toyota made a serious effort to differentiate the sedan of hatchbacks. As such, it has a different instrument panel, was about 8 inches long and has a longer wheelbase. This means more space for rear passengers.
Styles and Options
Toyota Vitz subcompact provides either a two or four hatchback doors. There is a sedan version. The L series includes power locks, air conditioning, four-way adjustable front seats, an onboard computer and an audio system with CD player, a USB audio interface and satellite radio. The LE adds power windows, remote keyless entry, driver seat six-way adjustable, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, Bluetooth and an upgraded sound system. The SE has a sport suspension, 16-inch wheels alloy four-wheel disc brakes, a unique grille, fog lamps, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and upgraded cloth upholstery.
The instrument panel has been relocated in front of the driver and has a clean design and easy to use. The driving position is comfortable and fast walking. Has good control during cornering, and a right angle, making it easy to park in tight spaces. Handling is also respectable for a subcompact.
The exterior design is really modern and youthful. The rounded shapes of the previous edition disappear and give rise to angular lines that are responsible for transmitting a more aggressive and sporty. It has increased its length and its height has been reduced, contributing to changes that it looks wider and greater presence.
Interior Vitz’ could not be simpler or easier to use, there are only a couple of meters to read and appreciate that the speedometer is positioned directly in front of the driver, rather than in the center of the board as in the previous Vitz. The extra length Vitz new generation ‘means that a fresh amount of leg room in the rear seat, while even the above average height is in the rear acceptable range.
Although plastics and upholstery in the Vitz are not exceptional, the materials are reasonably well finished. The front seats are comfortable and have enough room to rear three children or two adults. The four-door Vitz now has 15.6 cubic feet of cargo space, about the same as the Fiesta. But unless the Honda Fit (20.6 cubic feet) or the Hyundai Accent (21.2 cubic feet).
Engine and transmission
The Toyota Vitz Price is affordable and it comes with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder good for 106 horsepower and 103 lb.-ft. of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional.
On security as standard equipment brings nine air bags, stability control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), Anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and brake assist. Also, the seats have been designed to avoid heavy blows to the neck and its structure was designed to absorb impact.
On the Road
Being a small car the Vitz works perfect for the city. The four-speed automatic transmission changes well, but the six-speed automatic or continuously variable transmission (CVT) in its competitors are better something that Toyota should improve. Fold in the corners well and has a good braking system. It is comfortable on the road with two adults and two children behind for long trips, but do not add anyone else in the family, because the trip would be somewhat uncomfortable for the back.
In a segment where the competition has become brutal, where the Ford Fiesta has one front, and following are the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Sonic, and Mazda 2, Toyota Vitz advances in this minefield, with the simple assurance that a Toyota. Although the presence of materials and finishes low quality, play a role against the competition, which is leading this segment to a better level.
The first generation Vitz was passable, but the subcompact segment has become increasingly competitive as rivals offer more refinement, more useful and more enjoyable driving. This latest version of the Toyota Vitz has several improvements in key areas, which puts it on par with the competition. The Vitz should appeal to those looking for a practical and economical transport. And as I always say, “Toyota is Toyota”.
